Residencies

As an artist and dynamic participant in the community, Ms. Schroeder believes it is essential to approach, develop, and nurture a meaningful connection to our work.  To that end, successful and mutually-beneficial residency experiences are created with the imagination, resources, and input of the presenters, teachers, administrators, artists, community leaders, and all other supporters.  It is fundamental to seek out and include non-traditional segments of these communities, thereby creating the opportunity to enlighten the community, in a larger sense, about itself.

With Ms. Schroeder’s projects involving work in schools and neighborhood venues she maintains commitment to enhancing our community’s future in a meaningful way. She looks toward transformation within the community, on some level, as a result of our residency experiences.

In conjunction with each performance project, CORE Performance Company can provide complementary residency activities in the form of lecture-demonstrations, classes and workshops.  From master classes for experienced dancers to lecture demonstrations for kindergarten kids, CORE Performance Company can create the right residency to fit the needs of almost any venue.

We are flexible in accommodating varying numbers of participants as well as all levels of movement experience, abilities and needs, in grades K-12.

WORKSHOPS

In conjunction with each performance project, Sue Schroeder and CORE Performance Company can provide residency activities in the form of lecture-demonstrations, classes and workshops.  On the reverse is a listing of past and current workshop topics.

Workshop Topics

“Weaving Mayan Tales” Using the rich Mayan tradition of storytelling, this residency activity offers a fun yet educational dance program that can be modified to suit a wide range of age groups.  Combining music, dance, storytelling, hand-made masks and costumes we will introduce the concept of dance, present the basic principles of movement, explore the movement potential of the body and emphasize individual creativity through movement.  Residencies can focus on themes ranging from the power and importance of animal mythologies, environmental consciousness and/or the act of storytelling itself.

“The Movement of Music” Rhythm, Syncopation, Beat, Tempo – these are just a few of the musical ideas we will explore during The Movement of Music workshop.  Adaptable to a variety of age groups, this residency delves into the relationship between music and dance giving the participants an opportunity to create both a sound score and choreography.  Using a historical perspective from both the U.S. and around the world, participants will gain insight and understanding into the connection that music and dance have always had.

“Weaving the Dance” Inspired by the Mayan tradition of weaving, participants will have the opportunity to view weavings from a variety of Mayan communities in the Highlands region of Chiapas, Mexico.  Bringing the weavings to life, we will explore movement ideas from the patterns, colors and meanings within the textiles.

"Messiah: The Interfaith Dialogue"
The Messiah Inter-Faith Dialogue Project is designed to address religious intolerance by providing people of faith a safe forum to explore their differences and similarities. Bringing the discussion into the realm of movement - where emotions are embodied - and out of the realm of words, will open up new channels of communication among people of faith.

Members of CORE Performance Company will work with churches and faith-based organizations to create a series of events which will begin with movement inspired by Handel's Messiah, and continue by exploring the ways in which people manifest what is best in their faiths. As relationships build between the artists and the members of these churches or organizations, the artists and the dance will become the bridge for new learning by people of different faiths. These residency activities could begin with a performance of our dance interpretation of Messiah, followed by a facilitated discussion to move toward the larger ideas (rather than the doctrine) to be found in this work of art. The forum will engage participants in movement as well as discussion to further explore the notions of joy, protection, redemption, and faith inherent in the piece.
