Teaching artists from CORE Performance Company, Juana Farfan and Molly Schneider, completed a pilot program in the Cobb County Schools this week. They have been teaching 6-8th graders whose first language is not English, supplementing the students' Language Arts classes by using movement to illustrate ideas. SDC hopes to expand the very successful program through the school year.
Molly says, "Because language is a barrier between teachers and peers, the more visual approach is helpful for the students. It allows them to rest their brain from language discomfort and focus on 'doing' through their body not just on paper. We are not only striving for educational improvement, but also social comfort. Learning to speak aloud in English comfortably, to interact with peers, and to understand "Americanisms" are all goals as well."
