Gearing up for 2006-07 Season

Here at SDC, we have been planning all summer and the new season is soon upon us. Soon, CORE Performance Company will be back in the studio working on the finishing touches for their new piece, Corazon Abriendo (Heart Opening.) Then they're taking it on tour in Mexico to 3 cities before the US premiere in Atlanta in November.

The other programs at SDC start up in September as well. Dynamic X-Change programs in partnership with schools and social service organizations will begin to offer movement classes to underserved youth. Lunchtime in the Studio will begin again September 20 and the next Fieldwork workshop gets going on September 25.

Studio Spotlight:Tangueros Atlanta

If you've ever wanted to learn to tango, Tangueros Atlanta offers Argentine tango lessons at the SDC studios. The style is the social version of the tango, improvised from a basic vocabulary of steps. The next lesson is September 16. Visit the link below for more information.

Our collaborating composer/musician, Terrence Karn

Musician and composer, Terrence Karn, is collaborating with CORE Performance Company on the new piece, Corazón Abriendo (Heart Opening) that will premiere in Atlanta at 7 Stages Theater on November 10-12, 2006.

Traveling down to Chiapas with the dancers and video artist (last month's highlighted collaborator, Maya Ciarrochi,) Terrence experienced Mayan culture and has created a sound score inspired by the experience. He even learned to handweave! (And we have a photo to prove it...see right.)

Terrence has over 25 years of experience as a composer, musician, percussionist and dancer. Trained in ballet, flamenco and mime, Karn has performed with major companies in the US, Canada, and Europe. Karn teaches dance at the Houston Ballet Academy, is co-director of Gypsy Dance Theater and serves as Music Director for the University of Houston Dance Department. He has scored musical compositions for many prominent modern dance companies, and works with a variety of ethnic bands as a featured musician and dancer.
