Woodruff Art Center Presents…Dance @ the Rialto welcomes
Alicia Sánchez y Compañía: El Teatro de Movimiento

Atlanta (Oct. 11, 2005) – Woodruff Dance @ the Rialto announces the dynamic Mexican dance troupe Alicia Sánchez y Compañía El Teatro de Movimiento, Oct. 28, 2005, 8:00 p.m. at Georgia State University’s Rialto Center for the Performing Arts. Presented in partnership with the Woodruff Arts Center and Several Dancers Core, this program brings international contemporary dance to the Rialto stage. Tickets run $26 - $52 and are available at the Rialto Center’s box office, (404) 651-4727 or www.rialtocenter.org/buytickets.

Alicia Sánchez y Compañía (ASYC) El Teatro de Movimiento is a contemporary dance company founded in 1993 by Mexican choreographer Alicia Sánchez. To date, the company has presented 25 original productions and is known for adapting dramatic elements into its choreography, creating subtle emotive nuances combined with expressive physicality. The company has developed a distinctive style they call “theatre of movement” that places them in the vanguard of Latin American contemporary dance. “Theatre of movement” relies on the inherent dramatic effect of movement to convey emotion and express a sense of narrative in dance performance.

The company will be performing two pieces: Fuera de Tiempo (Out of Synch) and Entre tu, yo y los otros (Between you, me and the others). Sánchez explains Fuera de Tiempo by saying, “There are events in life that do not belong to time, but rather to memory… Memory is the history, the account of our lives written in folios and stamped with disproportionate expiration dates.” Entre tu, yo y los otros is a movement theatre piece parting from a single premise, “Is the place where you and I believe to be and the place where others believe us to be really the same? Is it geography which determines us, or is it culture?”

ASYC has represented Mexico in international festivals in New York, Montreal, Prague, and other cities and has won numerous awards and much critical acclaim. The choreographer, Alicia Sánchez, was named one of the 100 most important Mexican creative artists of the 20th Century, and ASYC dancer, Virginia Amarilla, was named one of the best dancers in Mexico by one of that country’s most important dance critics, Gustavo Emilio Rosales, in his annual review last year.

Other performances in the Woodruff Dance @ the Rialto series include the essence and spirit of hip hop portrayed by Rennie Harris PureMovement, the nationally acclaimed company Hubbard Street Dance Chicago; and CORE Performance Company with Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. All performances will take place at the Rialto Center. For more information, visit www.rialtocenter.org.

Messiah: CORE Performance Company
with Atlanta Baroque Orchestra
Saturday, April 1, 2006, 8 p.m.
This centuries-old sacred music score has been performed many ways since its premiere in 1742. Now, this classic work is re-envisioned with contemporary sophistication as CORE Performance Company, the professional dance company within Several Dancers Core, collaborates with conductor Antoine Plante of Houston’s Mercury Baroque, and Atlanta Baroque Orchestra to create a new take on the classic through contemporary dance. Sue Schroeder, founder and Artistic Director of Several Dancers Core, said of the piece, “My impulse to create this new dance begins for me with the astonishing beauty of Handel’s music…It is my desire to approach this new work as an illuminated manuscript, where the dance adds color, movement, and meaning to an already rich text and score.”
