Independent artists, innovative art: AtlantaMarch 1, 2007 Several Dancers Core and the Emory University Dance Program, in conjunction with The Field, a New York-based artist service organization, present the Spring Fieldwork Showcase, on Sunday, April 29, 2007 at 7:00 p.m., at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts on the Emory University campus at 1700 North Decatur Road, Atlanta, Georgia. The Spring Fieldwork Showcase is the culmination of the ten-week Fieldwork process and will feature works-in-progress by participating local artists. After the performance, the audience is invited to meet the artists and discuss the works viewed that evening. Several Dancers Core offers the Fieldwork workshops as part of CORE Initiatives, a component within the organization that offers programs to deepen education of movement for the community, in this case, for independent artists. The Fieldwork workshop is a rigorous 10-week workshop designed to help artists collect information about their work. Anyone who is interested in sharing their art-making process may participate Fieldwork sessions. Each week artists gather with their peers and have the opportunity to show developing work and receive feedback in a supportive environment. Fieldwork discussions are focused around a specific, facilitated, feedback structure. This open, but demanding, process creates an ongoing forum in which artists examine art, and challenge themselves to deepen their creative expression in whichever discipline they work. The Spring Fieldwork Workshop is facilitated by Ann Ritter. Ann is a performer, business woman and mother who lives in Decatur. She is a five-semester veteran of Fieldwork and sits on the boards of Beacon Dance Company and Friends of Theatre at Emory. She has performed with Beacon Dance as well as developing autobiographical solo pieces. She is currently at work on a performance piece based on the life of Georgia novelist Flannery O’Connor. Fieldwork in Atlanta is a part of The Field Forward Network, a program designed to bring The Field (NYC) to cities in the United States and abroad. The Field offers support to independent artists in creating new artwork, managing their careers and developing long-range strategies for sustaining a life in the arts. The idea to expand Field programming to cities outside New York sprung from conversations between Sue Schroeder, artistic director of Several Dancers Core, and Steve Gross, Co-Director of The Field NYC in the early 1990s. As a Field site, Several Dancers Core provides The Field’s programming for artists in our communities. CORE Initiatives programs are one of the three core activities of SDC, who besides presenting professional dance performances and administering community outreach programs, continuously seeks initiatives to enhance the personal and professional experiences of artists in general and dancers in particular. For more information about The Field, go to www.thefield.org. Tickets for the Spring Fieldwork Showcase cost $7.00 general admission and can be purchased by cash or check at the door on the day of the performance.
